Excell Program Director’s Message

The Excell Program was started in 1988 to offer grade level students help with Math and Science studies. The idea was to connect students with professional who had mastered those subjects sufficiently to make successful careers in what were later identified as STEM fields. The creators of the program considered the Los Angeles Council of Black Professional Engineers uniquely capable of providing that connection in the Black Community.

The volunteer STEM professionals are the heart and soul of the program. Engineers from multiple disciplines (like Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical and Aerospace); Biologists; Chemists; Chiropractors; Environmentalists; IT Professional; Medical Doctors; and others (including some parents) volunteer. They gather twice a year to conduct the 11-week tutoring / exposure / nurturing sessions. Volunteers, comprising of a core group of about 20, who have given time and efforts consistently for decades deserve most of the gratitude for the success of the program.

California State University, Dominguez Hills supports the program by providing facilities used for the Saturday morning classes. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, City of Los Angeles and County of Los Angeles provide valuable, well appreciated support.

Sincere thanks to all volunteers, supporters and participating parents.
