Al Nicholson, P.E.

Al Nicholson is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer. He retired as Lead Engineer with the Community Redevelopment Agency, Los Angeles (CRALA) in 2004. During his 41-year career, Mr. Nicholson worked for the CRALA as Chief Engineer and as a Project Engineer for multiple redevelopment throughout the City. Before that, he worked in Civil Engineering with LA City Department of Public Works, Bureau of Engineering, from 1969 to 1979. 

Mr. Nicholson’s hometown is Haughton, LA, where he received his primary and secondary education. Mr. Nicholson moved to Los Angeles California with his family on 1957. He graduated from Manual Arts High School in 1960. Mr. Nicholson served in the military, graduating from the California Military Academy, San Luis Obispo, in 1968 and from the US Army Engineer Branch School, Fort Belvoir, VA, in 1969. Mr. Nicholson Retired as Commissioned Officer, Engineering Branch, US Army and California National Guard in 1972.

Mr. Nicholson became a Registered Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California, in 1972, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles in 1975. Mr. Nicholson’s notable post graduate studies include studies in writing at the California Institute of Technology in 1983 and management studies at UCLA in 1999.

Mr. Nicholson has been a member of the Los Angeles Council of Black Professional Engineers since about 1972, becoming a Lifetime Member around 1985. Mr. Nicholson has served in many capacities with the Council. He was a former member of the Committee on Africa in the late 1970’s; a member of the Professional Development Committee; and former Co-chairperson of the Scholarship Committee in 1978. Mr. Nicholson has spent over 25 years working with the Excell Program. He has been an Excell Program administrator since 1992 and the Excell Program Director since 2005. Mr. Nicholson has also served as Member-at-Large of the LACBPE Executive Board since 2007.

Mr. Nicholson is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
